It’s always good when a product is capable of doing two jobs instead of one. Not only do multi-function products save costs in material, but they often can save installation time and more. Pressure Independent Control Valves (PICV) provide multiple functions to a Hydronic System in two different ways; by controlling flow in proportion to the load as well as limiting the maximum flow allowed in a circuit.
Hydronic systems must be balanced in order to maintain system efficiency and to deliver the desired comfort level in a given space. Terminal devices and other system components cannot deliver their optimal performance if the flow is not regulated properly. The result of poor flow control is lower efficiency of your system as well as comfort related challenges for occupants. In order to manage the flow requirements, automatic temperature control valves (ATC), manual balancing, or automatic balancing valves are placed throughout the system. Yet some of these valves are required to be balanced during installation and then again as the system may change with different load requirements.
Pressure Independent Control Valves combine the functionality of the ATC and an automatic balancing valve all into one nice package. PICV’s are capable of adjusting to changes in pressure while maintaining the correct flow for the designed system at multiple load requirements. PICV’s also reduce the requirement for labor intensive balancing since they are pressure independent and automatic. Since PICV’s combine multiple functions into one valve, the time involved in installation is also substantially reduced.
Nexus currently offers two PICV’s with a size range from ½” thru 10″. The Dynamic ND is available from ½” thru 2″ and the Vivax is available from 2 ½” thru 10″.

The 2 ½” – 10” Vivax™ PICV 3-in-1 design makes it easy to size and select, eliminate overflow, and provide 100% control valve authority. The precise control function and instant flow rate setting results in optimal end-user comfort and reduces energy consumption. The Smart-IS actuator provides easy digital programming when setting the range of flow and has the ability to display the actual flow for flow verification and testing. The Vivax™ VIVF comes standard with two pressure and pressure test plugs with flanged mating connections.
The Nexus Clean Smart separator operates 60% more efficiently than its competitors removing air, dirt, and magnetite as small as 5 microns. The ASME separators range from 2½”-24” with non-ASME models available upon request.
The Clean Smart series utilizes a steel separating element to efficiently separate the microbubbles and dirt from the system fluid. The double thrust technology incorporates a return flow upstream of the separating element to return the deaerated fluid to the system. Retrofit jobs are a breeze for the Clean Smart since there isn’t a coalescing media to become clogged with debris. The powerful neodymium magnets attract and retain any ferrous metal particles that have accumulated in the fluid. The unique dual dirt scraper efficiently removes any stubborn dirt from the base of the separator prior to the blowdown process. This ensures a complete blowdown every time the system is serviced.
The Flexvent automatic air vent effectively removes all the accumulated microbubbles while keeping the system fluid where it belongs – inside the separator. The engineered conical design of the vent means the float remains low enough to prevent fluid leaks and fouling common in other designs.

Efficiencies are also scored when using the Tribus 6-Way valve. By reducing the number of control valves in an application, there are less connections to be made making a much more time efficient and secure installation. In addition, to the valve connections, there may be reduced materials requirement in the field.
The Tribus allows for one, two-pipe terminal device to be used for both hot and chilled water without blending the fluids. This is achieved by a dedicated circuit for the supply and return of both hot and chilled water as well as a common connection to the terminal device.
Controlling the Tribus is also easy and requires just one actuator that is efficient to install with a simple twist, no tools required! This actuator with the correct inputs from the building automation system or in-room sensor will automatically switch from heating mode to cooling mode or off when there is no demand for heating or cooling.
Also available with the Tribus are a series of calibrated Cv discs that can be installed to provide the right amount of control to both the heating or cooling circuits. Each valve is provided with 12 Cv discs (2 of each Cv) to set the desired control. An optional mounting bracket can be purchased to support the weight of the valve if necessary, in the installation.
